Background on HCG

The HCG diet is so great is because it helps people get amazing results and reach their weight loss goals faster and then goes further in helping them maintain that weight. Dr. Simeons spent 40 years researching his protocol and studying how the hypothalamus works in regards to weight. Please read and reread his document, Pounds and Inches, for further explanation of his research (a link to this document is found on right side of the page under important documents to read). HCG helps you maintain your set weight by retraining your hypothalamus. Most weight loss protocols can be successful in helping you lose weight, but as often seen with fad yo-yo diets, they don’t help in maintaining that weight and people often gain back the lost weight and more. Here is where Dr. Simeon’s Protocol is different if you follow it closely.

So how does HCG work? HCG does not cause weight loss, rather eating a very restricted caloric intake causes weight loss. On this diet, you consume a very restricted calorie intake of 500 calories a day. Remember: eat less calories than you use=weight loss. Normally if we eat 500 calories a day, we get very hungry and often go into starvation mode where your body uses muscle or tissue for energy instead of fat. The HCG helps you utilize your fat stores for energy instead of muscle. So even though you are only eating 500 calories, your stored fat is contributing the rest of the calories your body needs to function without going into starvation mode (one pound of fat equals 3,500 calories). Most people don’t feel hungry and actually feel good and energized on the diet most of the time.

Once you reach your weight loss goals, if you don’t follow the protocol for maintenance and you go back to your old habits, you’ll certainly regain the weight!! No amount of weight loss can compensate for poor habits. For optimal success you have to work hard to maintain your weight loss and retrain your hypothalamus to that set point. I also believe that you can be thin but not fit and would encourage people to make positive lifestyle changes that incorporated a regular exercise program and a healthy diet full of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and a limited amount of sugar and processed or simple starch intake.

If you stick with it, it works!! You can do anything for 26 days and the results are so worth it!! If you think you can’t live on 500 calories, I promise you, you can. Your body is using the 500 calories you are eating, plus all the calories that are being utilized from the fat.

Let's Get Started (Please see link on right for full document)

Days 1 and 2: Loading days. Load for 2 days along with taking the drops 3 times per day. You want to eat a diet high in fats and calories, as much as you can stand. Your body has a long-term storage of energy (you know, the fat we’re trying to liberate) that we are going to use during the 500 calorie diet and it also has a more readily available short-term energy source and this is the one we want to fill up. It takes a few days for the HCG to get into your system and so when you start the 500 calorie diet, you want to have a full short-term storage reserve for your body to use. If you don’t load enough on these days, your short-term storage reserve won’t be adequate while the drops take effect and you will most likely be very hungry for the first few days of the 500 calorie diet. An added benefit is that after stuffing yourself sick, you want to and are ready to start eating less.

500 calorie diet along with taking drops 3xday. Take the drops with the 500 calorie diet for a minimum of 21 days and up to a maximum of 40 days. You then stop the drops and continue the 500 calorie diet for three more days. It takes the drops a few days to get out of your system. If you are going to exceed a short 21-day phase (again, you may continue up to maximum of 40 days), Dr. Simeons recommends that you go off the drops one day a week to make sure the drops don’t lose their effectiveness.

Here’s a sample day. Wake up, go to the bathroom, weigh. Drink tea or lemon water all morning (sometimes I’ll have ½ of one of my fruits or 1 melba snack if I want).

Lunch: salad with chicken and Italian seasonings with strawberries on top. Lemon vinaigrette dressing and breadstick or melba toast on top.

Dinner: Hamburger and grilled onions, yummy. Breadstick on the side. Strawberry Lemonade slushy for dessert.

If you want something for breakfast or a midmorning snack, you can eat one of your fruits or a breadstick or melba toast. Whatever works for you? As long as you don’t go over your 2 fruits or 2 bread or toasts for the day you can eat them whenever you want.

Maintenance phase: The objective here is to maintain the weight you were at on the day you quit taking the drops. You must try to keep the weight within a very narrow range in order to retrain your set point. You will do this by weighing yourself every morning after emptying your bladder. This means not gaining or losing more than 2 pounds of your weight the day you finished the drops. Dr. Simeons theorized that it takes about three weeks for the lost weight to stabilize. Your body wants to regain the weight it lost, and you must be aware of that and fight to reset that weight. If you want to lose more weight, you must wait until 6 weeks after finishing the first course to repeat a second course. You can complete as many courses as needed to reach a normal weight.

For the maintenance phase, he instructs you to eat what and when you want for the next three weeks, avoiding sugar and starch (bread, rice, pasta, cereal, tortillas, pastries, potatoes, and etc.). You can continue to eat what you were eating, just a lot more of it and may add good fats and dairy such as milk, cheese, cottage cheese, olive oil, nuts, avocados, etc. Your body is used to the 500 calories you were eating plus the 1500-4000 calories you were getting from the fat released into your system (500+1500-4000=2000-4500). As you can see, the body was getting around 2000-4500 with the HCG and 500 calorie diet. It’s important that you eat enough calories off the 500 calorie diet that you don’t go into starvation mode. You should eat at a minimum, 1500 calories, and really probably closer to 2000 or more is better.

After the Three Week Maintenance Phase: Your new set point should be established and you can gradually add in starch and sugar and monitor your weight with daily weighing always staying within 2 pounds of your finish weight. If you have more weight to lose you can repeat a course of HCG after waiting 6 weeks after your first course. Each time you complete a course of HCG, you must wait add an additional 2 weeks between courses to make sure the HCG remains effective. For example, after one course, you wait 6 weeks, 2 courses you wait 8 weeks, 3 courses you wait 10 weeks, and so on.


To summarize:
Load for 2 days along with taking HCG drops 3xday.
21-40 days of 500 calorie diet along with HCG drops 3xday
Quit taking HCG drops and continue 500 calorie diet for 3 days.
3 week maintenance phase: eat what you want except avoid starches and sugars. Weigh yourself everyday and maintain within 2 pounds of finish weight.
After 3 week maintenance phase: gradually add in starches and sugars and monitor with daily weighing.
